A Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist gets inside the mind of a serial killer—and uncovers what makes truly evil men kill.
Robert Frederick Carr III was clever and appeared friendly, the perfect lure to draw in his next victim. His crimes were unconscionable he kidnapped fifteen people, raped and tortured most, and murdered four before being arrested. After confessing to his grisly crimes and leading police on a cross country grave digging trip to recover the bodies, Carr begged Edna Buchanan, the police reporter for the Miami Herald, to write about him, to help prevent future crimes like his. During long hours of interviewing him in his jail cell, Buchanan found Carr to be an instinctively intelligent sadist, a predator who abandoned his wife and children to pursue a five year odyssey of violence. Carr's story is a chilling look into the dark soul of a born killer.

It just wasn't good. I read it because I am an avid reader of true crime. However, this was not good. The writing is fine. However, the narrative from the killer's point of view is ridiculously self serving and skewed. Other than the writer giving him a forum to relive his crimes I really didn't see the point in that.Product details

Not very good.
I am a long time fan of Edna Buchanan. Until this point, I have read all of her titles, except the one covering the Robert Frederick Carr case that took place during the late 70's. I didn't realize though, until I received this book, that the actual author was in fact Robert Frederick Carr himself. In the book's prologue section, Ms. Buchanan tells the reader that Carr was above average in intelligence and self awareness, his ability to articulate his life and deeds, and especially his truthful version of events. His curious lack of regard towards his victims are expressed throughout the book in Carr's words alone. Indeed, Ms. Buchanan at the time was a true crime reporter for a major Florida newspaper. I can only imagine Ms. Buchanan's personal thoughts about Carr as she listened to him, day after day, recite in minute detail, the horrific acts of senseless mayhem he cast upon his victims, several of whom were just young children at the time. She stayed true to Carr's recollections, for I felt as I read the book, that I was listening to Carr, first hand.
This didn't affect whether I appreciated this book any more or less. Had I known beforehand the structure or composition of this book, I might have been satisfied with just researching Carr on the internet, and saving a few bucks in the process. However, because I was so determined to read every one of Edna's book titles, and had no problem in ever locating her other titles, except for the Robert Carr story, I had become a tad bit obsessive. And let me tell you, I searched around for the Carr title, EVERY DAMNED WHERE. Not a single library or retail book outlet seemed to even know about this title. should be applauded for their sense of what customers look for or need. At the very least, they have helped considerably in my case, as I deal with some of my lesser OCD issues.
This book was a trial to read. I was sorry I purchased it...what nonsense! A rambling account of nothing worth spending time on.
Nice to know what's actually in the head of a self important, delusional sociopath. He actually thinking that his victims felt anything but fear and loathing for him made me sick.
It wasn't in chronological order. There were times were he gave the same date but the events didn't quite fit. It is interesting to be able to go into the mind of a serial offender. I agree with him when he said to stop making criminals famous. We are just encouraging the behavior by doing this.
A well written book about one of America's worst criminals. It's hard to believe that people like Carr continuously get parolled, let out of jail, released with good behavior yet you have to know he will not change his ways. This book in addition to an insane killer shows tha faults of the judicial system. Good book on a troubling subject.
It just wasn't good. I read it because I am an avid reader of true crime. However, this was not good. The writing is fine. However, the narrative from the killer's point of view is ridiculously self serving and skewed. Other than the writer giving him a forum to relive his crimes I really didn't see the point in that.
